Hotel Housekeeping

My wife just applied for a part time job at the Super 8 motel in town. It's run by people who are probably Muslim. They seem nice enough, but my wife is starting to wonder if she should take the job, should it be offered to her. The reasons are, they pay by the room, which is $3.00 per room cleaned, and they are also a little difficult to understand all of the time. Now I guess if she could clean 3 rooms an hour that would be ok for pay, but if she could only do 2, that wouldn't even be minimum wage. Also, when you can't understand someone all of the time, there could be mix ups or something. What do you think?

responses and comments:

they ar e probly Sikh or something if they are nice, and if its worth it to her to do that job, then she should take it I would not care what ethnicity my boss was, as long as they are fair and kind and don't yell too much if they are yelling all the time, maybe its best if you have no language in common [kurtbiewald]
My wife doesn't care what country they came from, just that they are nice and fair as far as pay goes. [dragonryder]

I know what you are saying! I worked at an Amerihost Inn and my sister runs front desk at a Super 8. Yep, muslims just took that super 8 over. I wouldn't work there. What state is it in? These new owners son just got arrested for trying to consign someone who had a jer to illegally go back to his native country and bring his relatives back. These muslims own 14 hotels and 3 gas stations...give me a break! I belong to the US but I live in poverty! Why are they buying all the US business's like hotel, resturants and gas stations? Why are they allowed to? I can't buy one. I was told they get a grant to start a business! Maybe I should move to their country and then move back here years later so I can get a grant! I don't like it. They don't think they should follow by our rules and practices. $3.00 per room is unfair! The super 8 and amerihost in here pays $6.50 an hour. I know how har it is to clean rooms, it's hard work. Unless she's desperate I wouldn't work there. Work American owned stuff! [msmiata60]
Oh yeah forgot to answer you about what state this Super 8 is in. We live in Illinois, over by the Mississippi River, about 4 hours northeast from St. Louis,Missouri. [dragonryder]

Oh Dragon, if I was her I would not take it. I had some inexperience with this. When I was a little younger I supplemented my income by working in a motel. I had a child to raise and I needed extra income wherever I could get it. These people were East Indian, I think. Anyway I had a devil of a time trying to understand them, and sometimes the list they gave me to clean had people in them. I was supposed to clean the rooms that were vacant. It was most confusing and I ended up quitting because of the language thing. I think she will be working hard to do 3 an hour. I think that is very low pay for cleaning a room... not all patrons leave a tip when they leave. [OreoCookie3]
I've never left a tip after staying in a hotel room. I didn't know it was customary. As for my wife taking the job, it's doubtful she'll even be asked since she has no experience other than cleaning our house. Still though, if she did get asked, she's wondering what to do. It sounds like it would be a bad idea. [dragonryder]

I don't think $3.00 per room is a good deal. She should receive an hourly wage, at least minimum wage. Perhaps they forgot they own a business in The United States of America and should pay a decent wage to their employees! Perhaps that is the wages of their own country, but it shouldn't "fly" here! Plus, how clean can a person truly get a hotel room if they are rushing to do 3 in an hour? I certainly wouldn't want to stay at any hotel that rushes their cleaning service! I am not saying your wife would slack off on the job of cleaning and would most likely try to be as thorough as she could, but I think she will find she cannot be thorough and quick when it comes to cleaning a hotel/motel room. Some people can be such slobs, especially when they are staying at a hotel/motel. PEACE [fpd1955]
Yeah it does sound kind of odd huh? It does seem that it would be hard to do a good job in twenty minutes time. I mean, you have to strip the bed or beds, remake it or them, restock toiletries and towels, clean the furniture and the bathroom, and vacuum. My wife has a physical ailment too and she gets tired fast, so that would be a downside for her. That story about all the condoms...whew!!! Maybe the guy just didn't know how to use one? LOL [dragonryder]

Hey Dragon, Eerm are they able to do that?? LOL I cleaned rooms at a Holiday Inn waaaaaaay back when LOL, and I really don't recall how many rooms I would clean in an hour. I mean unless they had some pretty good lodgers who cleaned up after themselves, I don't think she could do three an hour, maybe two and start on the third. I've never heard of such a thing. I don't think I would like to work with people that I'm not able to understand. It would create some chaos and some misinformation on either parties behalf. Theirs or your wifes. I don't think she should take it because of the pay!! That sounds like some crap to me. Bay Lay Gray xx [BayleighGray]
LOL She will be cleaning rooms that were not used then? LOL I don't see how that can be done, but that's just me. I'm not much on cleaning so maybe I don't know all the time saving tips and things. Haha Bay xx [BayleighGray]

Hope she's a fast and thorough housekeeper cause they frown on not being able to do the job fast enough. I worked for Holiday Inn Express near me for a few months b4 I finally quit cause I just couldn't do clean fast enough and they do spontaneous checks on you so if it's not clean, I got docked a 1/2 hrs. pay. I got paid by the hour thou, not by room. I hate cleaning anyways so I have no clue what possessed me to go after a housekeeping job. [blackbriar]
She would probably be once she got a routine down. I'm worried about the way she gets so short of breath when doing physical activities.Yeah if you don't like cleaning, I wouldn't recommend a job doing it. ;-) [dragonryder]

The language part would bother me as well. It's nerve recking to try to understand some people. As for the rooms and the rates. It would not be a problem for me. I clean with joy. and I am speedy at what I do. As for your wife. tell her to go to costco and stock up on some redbull energy drinks. Or some good old vitamins with energy. That will make it worth her while. [giftsandbagscom]

I have worked for several hotels as a housekeeper and I have NEVER heard of someplace paying by the room. Personally I would quit that piece of crap job and find a real job that is going to pay proper wages And maybe a place where I could understnad what the boss is saying [zukepr]
Well she doesn't have the job yet. It sounds like from responses here she shouldn't take it if it's offered. [dragonryder]

Firstly what is 'probably Muslims'? either they are muslims or they are not and if your wife has any problems working with a muslim, I don't think she should give this a second thought. People from different religious backgrounds do tend to have different views on the most trivial issues, so it may not be worth it. on the other hand, if there are other Christian workers in the motel and they have no problems, I don't think she would have any problems professionally. Personally of course she may want to review the situation if she is not totally comfortable at the beginning of the job. Secondly, regarding the no. of rooms, if they have a fixed thing going like it will have to be (min. or max) 3 rooms in an hour then your wife will have to stick to it. otherwise the no. of rooms she finishes in an hour will depend on her isn't it? [sudiptacallingu]
Msmiata, I agree with you about the way Muslims treat Americans a lot. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say they are being racist. I don't like to call anyone racist, because only they know what's in their heart and mind. I get called racist for not liking illegals. I don't think it's proper to call someone racist just because they don't like one certain group of people, that aren't even the same race. As for the Bible of the Muslims, I know about some of it, and yes it is very scary. [dragonryder]

Um lets not sterotype religions or races here. Basically there is a communication problem. There are ways to communicate using hand gestures etc. Personally I wouldn't take the job.. I don't like piecework. Maybe she should take it for a while and see how many tips she gets. [Monkeyrose]
Ok, thanks for explaining. I guess I should have put that they are probably from the middle east. [dragonryder]

I don't think she should take the job. It doesn't matter who is running the place, even if they were Americans who only spoke English the pay rate doesn't seem fair or even legal. Your wife is a smart lady and I'm sure she can get a better job than this. If I were her I'd keep looking. [MSV1313]
Thank you for your confidence in her. I think she's smart too, but the problem is, she can really only work a few hours a day. One because of her responsibilities at home, and two because of her physical problems. I know she is hoping to get a noontime helper job at a school. I agree also that the pay seems a little odd.
