Maybe some already have a second home, or a vacation home, but I think the majority of the MyLotters, including me, do not have one. I asked my mom the other day where she'd like to have a second home if she could afford it, and she said Colorado Springs, Colorado. I can see why. It's so incredibly beautiful and the impact of nature is a constant. If I were to choose my own second home (I'd like to get my first home, although I'm grateful for my apartment), I'd choose the hills of Tennessee. I'm tempted to choose a place more exotic, but beauty and peace are welcome no matter where you are.
A lot of people think of Florida or the Hamptons for a second home, or often stars buy one on the Mediterranean. Where would you pick for yours (assuming money is not an option)?

I would choose Gatlinburg, TN. I love it there! I have made many, many trips there and can't wait to go back!!!! We went there on our honeymoon and I try to go Christmas shopping there every year. [aroten2000]
It is so much fun. My mom and I usually go and that makes it even better. We get to spend some fun time together. They have great shopping there and lots of it too!!! [aroten2000]
Mmmm...this gets me thinking as there would be so many ideal spots I would love to have not only a second home but a home period outside of my apartment...Think a nice quaint country cottage somewhere in the countryside of one of the British Isles...surrounded by a beautiful garden area and lots and lots of wooded forest nearby-- Actually since I'm a Lord of the Rings fan, I'd absolutely love to live in a Hobbit hole type dwelling...LOL [pyewacket]
If you did and other Rings fans found out, you'd have a line ourside your hole, LOL. But you could charge people just for looking at it too. Free income. Sounds ideal. [AmbiePam]
I would love to have a second home in Hawaii. Just think! I would never need air conditioning because the temperature would always be cool enough with the ocean breeze just to have the windows open. I would love to spend winters there and then come home during the summer... heck I might not want to come home. [OreoCookie3]
Well I was just telling the truth! I think ya won it! Its a place thats still in the US, but exotic. Hot, but with cool breezes and nice beaches. And the nights are great! I don't think you can get anymore 2nd home/retirement home win than that ;p [theprogamer]
Hmm.... well since I live in Australia I'd say I'd have my second hom in Byron Bay, NSW. It's a beautiful town that's very relaxed and laid back. It's only about a couple hours away from where I live so it wouldn't take too long to get there plus I could rent it out to tourists. I'd just be worried about my furnishings being damaged or things going missing. In fact I'd feel a little odd having someone else live in my house for 3/4 of the year but I couldn't think of any other way to be able to have a second home. [coffeeshot]
Australia was almost where I said I wanted my second home. The time I went was amazing. I can't imagine living there. [AmbiePam]
Well there are a few choices. Don't know why but I'd probably pick coastal South Carolina. Tons of stuff to see plus I found it relaxing. There's also Florida, Northwestern Canada and others. [theprogamer]
Hah thanks Ambie! Some people look at me like I'm nuts when I mention all of those, but I totally agree about South Carolina. IA few relatives from there and plus theres a few good scenic routes and spots from there to another possible retreat Virginia :) If I was to live in my grandfather's and greatgrandfather's legacy I would just want to try Mohave and the southwest U.S. Thats why I posted that second response. [theprogamer]
I think Maldives is the best place as a second home. Because it has blue sky, blue sea, many beautiful trees. There is a lot of beautiful views and coast. The most important reason is it has fine weather to live,it will good for our health! [sunfish05]
I heard of many people in HK are eager to move to Maldives, they say Maldives like heaven. So I think it must be a good place. But Tsunami maybe hit it,personal safety will be threaten. On the whole,it is the right place to spend the rest of life. [sunfish05]
I would like to choose a place which is suitable to live,it means that the place should be good for health. [lydia002005]
Good idea. That realistically would be something I would seriously consider. [AmbiePam]
I'm a mountain person, so I'd like to have a nice cabin in the mountains, southern Colorado or northern Arizona would be perfect. It's where I have always felt at peace with the universe. [craftcatcher]
You got some of mine down Craft, stylin. I've gotta agree with you. [It's almost as if I have a retirement admirer ;p] But I find myself struggling between rolling plains and hills, mountainous and plateau areas, or islands and oceans. Its tough to really choose one general location >.< [theprogamer]
I would have to choose a central location in the state of Wisconsin, as I have been enjoying the entire state over the last 4 years for vacations and weekend get aways. Maybe Oshkosh, or Chippewa Falls. Wisconsin is like a haven for relaxation and great people. They are very festive in Wisconsin - and I seriously doubt any cow on the West coast is treated any finer! Sawdust days festival is a blast. Apostle Islands too. Now as much as I like the Northwoods there's also Michigan's west coast and U.P. Both states are so fine. Michigan from Ste Joseph to Mackinaw has a treasure cove of lighthouses and wonderful scenery. Glenn arbor with Cherries, South Haven with Blueberries. And Taquamenon Falls in the U.P.! Whitefish point? I could on and on about these two states. I'll just have to stay in Missouri and visit I suppose - I could never choose between those two. OH - and the LAKEs Holy wha do they got lakes! Ride the USS Badger from Manitowoc to Ludington. I'll never stop - Thank you for asking. [Clovis_50]
Lots of fields in Ohio, between the cities you can get some good sites in. They even have a few good overlook bridges over valleys and forest and the views are breathtaking. [theprogamer]
since i love the beach, i would love to have a small house with a my own private beach. [tuffy999]
If I could have a 2nd home somewhere, it would be where I would be on a rocky coastline with a beach, and woods around and behind the house. I don't know if any place like that exists, but that's what I want. [KarenO52]
I already have a vacation home. It is at Penneshaw, on Kangaroo Island. A top tourist resort, I was very fortunate in haviong bought the property & put a tansportable house on it before the land price hike. If I was to choose another location for a vacation home, it would either be oin the River Murray, or on york Peninsula next to the beach. [jennybianca]
I remember you telling us about your last visit to Kangaroo Island. Just hearing about it makes a person want to visit. [AmbiePam]
Near the mountains out west. Montana, Oregon, Northern California, Washington, Idaho, Colorado. Actually that is where I would like my first home to be. I still live in an apartment also. [gberlin]
That's good. But it does take away some of the mystery. LOL [AmbiePam]
I have never been to the beach so I would like to have a vacation home on the beach. Pictures of South Carolina look so good. If two places were possible, since I have never been but barely into Colorado, a cabin in the mountains of Colorado sounds like something I would do. I like quiet so that would be good as long as it was several miles at least from anyone else. But since it is not possible, the hills of South Cental Kansas will have to do. [nana1944]
I would probably have a big log cabin up in Tennessee. My family vacations in Tennessee a lot, and there is a resort we stay at that has land you can buy and build on. The cabins are gorgeous and I would love to be able to go and live there in the fall. Can you imagine being able to live in a cabin during the fall and see the leaves and feel the fall air? I'm a sucker for the fall.:P My friend always says she would like to have a house in Colorado. I've heard it's very beautiful there. My husband and my sister would be beach house people. That would be okay too, but I would rather have the cabin. [Flight84]
If I could go on a vacation or have a second home,it would be in Alaska .I have always had a fascination with it and would love to be able to visit or have a second home.I know a lot of people think of florida but if they knew what i knew, they wouldn't lol! [66jerseygirl]
I can't help myself ,lol. [66jerseygirl]
Oh it s reallt not easy pick up the vacation home. But if I could have any opportunity, I would probably pick up one in the Europe.Somewhere like in Spain, Italy, Croatia, or in Greece. Those countries are beautiful for me and also they have friendly people there. If I could pick it here, yeah I would probably pick one in Florida or maybe in Hawaii.I would probably buy every year new new one and old one sell.:))I don't like much going to the same place, so I would go every year somewhere else. [laurika]
I would have it in Alaska. I am from there and would love to have a house there. I am now living in Scotland and sure do miss it. My brother and his wife still live there. [spiritwolf52]
well i would love to live in hawaii or maybe one of the islands, like the carribean or something.i love the views and just the nature of all the palm trees etc. [3lilangels]
Hi AmbiePam I would love that so much. I would have to pick where my sister is living because I miss her so much. And she lives in florida. I wouldnt want to live there all year round because of the ungodly heat and humidity. So I would only go and live there in the winter months. Like some many people do. I could never understand that but now I do.LOL [TerryZ]
Yeah, the humidity is killer. I know our humidity is bad, but Florida beats even us. [AmbiePam]
sumwhere in greece or scotland.......both places are so beautiful......i wuld luv to have my second home .....thts if i culd afford...... [TheDevil]
I'd be torn between a couple of different locations. We love Florida particualrly the Gulf Of Mexico are and would love a beach house in Destin but I couls also easily be swayed into getting a place in Las vegas which is probably my favorite city in the world. [inked4life]
I don't think anyone would ever be bored in Las Vegas. [AmbiePam]
I would move up to Northern Minnesota or Wisconsin and live in a log home on the lake. I love being near the water and trees! It's so inspirational! [jillhill]
It sounds like something out of a story book. Very ideal. [AmbiePam]
well. to me, i would like to choose a place which has fresh air, a beautiful beach and is quiet. but the most important thing is that place must have a good public security. [coolandbold]
I've worked and lived in the biggest city in our country but I don't know why strange big cities make me sad. I have also partly lived in a very rural area, full of nature and such, and I did not like it either. I think I'd still have my second home in the same gentle city I am living now in the Philippines. Ours is small city with a lot of rural touch to it. I just want to stay here. [funny52f]
That's good. You're content. [AmbiePam]
My choic would be tenerife, the canarian islands, as I have fallen in love with this island, and dream to get there and to never turn back to live on the Europe continent, just going to visit relatives and friends, I mean it with all of my heart ;) [thefortunes]
Your Mom has the rigt idea there! Colorado Springs has some breathtaking views. If money were not a concern and I culd have another home anywhere I wanted....I would love to live in Malta right in the heart of the Mediterranean. To have a small coastal spot of my own I could scuba dive til my hearts content! I would travel all over Italy ( especially Tuscany) and Greece...yeah I'll quit dreaming now, but thanks for the daydream for awhile, it was really nice! [Cammeel1]
You listed places I can only dream about, but I guess you never know when that dream can come true. [AmbiePam]
If I could ever afford a second home I would want one in New Brunswick because I went up to visit my best friend last year and this was where they just got a home . I loved it so much , I found it so beautiful and the prices of everything was so much cheaper then in our area . I wanted to stay and have said ever since I came back home that if I were to ever move this would be where I would want to live for sure . I just loved every bit of my vacation and it was so nice seeing my best friend again . [samtaylorskykierajen]
With beautiful scenery AND a best friend, it would be hard to top! [AmbiePam]
I'd like a little cabin on an island somewhere with a nice view. Not too far away, so that I could go there easily. [cutepenguin]
Oh I would love to have a vacation home in Israel. The scenery there is so beautiful and the history of the place would be so interesting.. [carmelanirel]
Yes, but it might be pretty dangerous too. Of course, when there is a land you love, sometimes other things take precendent. : ) [AmbiePam]
actually i have been looking at south of Spain. a friend of mine,an expatriate like me working here, took my wife and me to Andalucia where he has a very very very nice vacation home. i always wanted one and dreamed of one often. when we were there he introduced me to his father-in-law who happens to be a big land owner. maybe i can offer the old man for one of the homes facing the sea overlooking a cliff? [sandwedge]
Just don't fall OFF the cliff. : ) [AmbiePam]
I would love to have a second home right here in California. Over near the coast in the Santa Cruz mountains. It's not too far to the ocean, and the weather there is just about perfect. Yeah, there's the lovely rainstorms during the winters that cause the roads to wash out at times, but so what! I would just stay snuggled up in my nice cozy home. LOL [Katlady2]
When I was a kid, my grandma and grandpa had a small two room summer home in northern Minnesota. They would spend the whole summer there and come back to Illinois in the winter. It was beautiful there. My grandpa built the little house and dug a well for water. Great spring water. I use to go there for a week or two in the summer with my dad. It is beautiful in northern Minnesota. Lots of lakes for fishing. So I would choose to have my 2nd home there. [OURDEW]
It sounds like a place too good to be true. But since it is real, I would want a place exactly like that as well. [AmbiePam]
I would prefer to have a second or vaction in Vancouver BC and any part of USA. Just to work their and earn big money to satify my wants and needs in life. To travel whenever i want, go shopping with my family and eat a lot. marilyn23 [marilyn23]
Assuming money is no option, I would choose somewhere in India..a suite in the Hyatt Regency Delhi. Of course, I would like to have a limo with an Indian driver who knows the area like the back of his hand. [Yestheypayme2dothis]
I'm not really sure where I would have a second home. There are so many beautiful places that I would like to pick, such as Tennessee, Hawaii, Colorado, and many others. I think if I had the money, it would take me a long time to choose. If I could afford it, I would have several homes, one in each state. But if I could only afford one, I think it would take me a while to decide. If I pick one location, I would feel like I'm missing out on the other places. [AdTe23]
Sounds like you'd need an airplane too. : ) [AmbiePam]
I would buy one in Grenada, why because it's my home town its exotic and its in the Carribean. [kent12345]
I'm lucky in away, I have purchased my second home in Abruzzi, Italy. I have bought my birth house, and now I in the process of restoring it, it has been unlived in for 25 years. It is a challenge, especially dealing with all the legal, and permiting required. It has take 3 years to do the above. Hopefully this week we get started. [rickjason]
That is so exciting! I bet a lot of people would love to do that if they had the finances. I also can't imagine how hard it is to get all the legalities sorted out. I saw my dad build a couple buildings, and the city just gave him fits. So I wish you the best of luck! And welcome to MyLot. : ) [AmbiePam]
yea..colorado springs, colorado is such a lovely place..waaaaaaaahhhhhhhh.. but i have never ben there..:( i would like to go to any isolated island where i can peacefully and very particularly the place should be cool.. and i also want to go to switzerland or hawaii.. any place which is less populated and the weather should be nice..whatever the place may be ..coz i love to travel..so i dont mind much abt the place but it should fulfill those two conditions..:P and i also want go to kashmir..but ther are many prohibited area..so i chose the other palces..! [syndhujaa]
first I would need to get my first house. I currently live in Atlanta & I really like it here. So I would probably have my first house in Atlanta. As for my second or Vacation house there are a lot of places that I could chose. However I have kitties that I would not want to leave for even a short period of time. As you know, if you take your animals overseas, you have to put them in quaratine. To be honest I really am bit of a homebody & don't like to travel. I also don't drive & transporting pets on public transportation can be extremely challanging. [GaiaFireLynx]
A thought provoking discussion for people like us who doesn't have second home. where would i like to have my second home or location of vacations:) i would like to go to Maldives for vacations and entertainment and fun where as for a second home i would like to choose some hilly mountainous area. because usually mountainous areas are usually cold. i love cold:) and mountains and this combination is worth loving for me:) [walkinthecloudz]
