Is It Possible To vacation At Home

With gas prices as they are, many are saying, "Vacation at home." Is this really possible? What would constitute a vacation at home? Have you attempted this? What are some ideas that you have for 'vacationing at home?'

Vacation is suppose to be a relaxing thing so staying at home and not working is a vacation. You could be doing a major project at home and it still be considered a vacation because you're still not at work. [CatsandDogs]

i think now people has to incvent ways for that. its really getting costlier. so may be reading a good book, taking rest at home, cooking some nice food can make a vacation at home. [subha12]

I think it is quite possible. A lot of times we are so anxious to get away that we neglect to ever take in what is relatively close to us. We take it for granted - aw, we can always do that later. There are likely many attractions within a hundred miles of any of us that we have not seen because it is so close to home. we could take several day trips for our vacation, taking in such things as botanical gardens, camping, fishing, horseback riding, hiking, mountain climbing, there are so many adventures awaiting us if we just open our eyes...we may not have to spend an arm and a leg just trying to get somewhere. With the prices they way they are I am not going to go away this year. I usually go to see my brother and his family in Florida but it is just too expensive. Maybe I will try and do something locally. [howard96h]
Your right, there are many options and if I don't go to visit them then I have to wait a whole year and I don't like not seeing them. I need to get out of this city. I will talk to him and see what we can do. Thanks for your wonderful reply. [howard96h]

They have a name for this, they're calling it the "staycation". I think you can do it. Most of us don't explore the places that tourists go that are right around where they live. [bonbon664]
Wow, I didn't know that the concept had been given a name. That is a clever name. Thanks for sharing that with us bonbon! Luckily I just moved to a new city and it is much larger with many things to do. I could stay busy for many summers to come in this city! Ha! [crazynurse]

Yes it is! CNN recently did a report on it. They have coined a phrase for it too. They call it Staycations. We are trying to see some of our local sites. It is neat to become a tourist of your own town. [ersmommy1]

I think it could be very enjoyable just making short day trips and the comfort of my own bed at night. I am lucky because I live close to the beach. [whiteheather39]

I think they mean explore the local tourist attractions that we never explore because we live somewhere (museums, parks, and so on). Also try going to the movies at a weird time, then catch lunch at a new or favorite spot, eat desert first (a vacation tradition in my household!!). [cripfemme]

I have tried to vacation at home with little success. There are always people dropping by and the phone rings constantly. We often go to a different state and town to shop and have dinner. We make a day of it and it "seems" like a little get away. Then we return home to the best accommodations in town. Cheap too! [ElusiveButterfly]

It might be possible, but not desirable. If you are in your house and apartment and say that we will just walk or take the bus to a park and come back at night, it is not a vacation. One thing about a vacation is to get away from your local environment and get someplace that is more than a day's away from your home. When I lived in Vancouver as a little girl, my mother and father would put me on the bus to visit my aunt and uncle in the Okanagan and there were those who went to several small towns. There were camping spots outside of the city where you could drive there, and walk to commissionaries. You parked the car or the trailer and you could stay for a week or so, and during that time, you walked everywhere. If you go to your home, you worry about leaving the water on, the mail, etc. Vacations are for a rest. The ones who suggest vacations at home have never tried it. We did and we did not like it one bit. [suspenseful]

Oh I don't want to vacation at home. I really don't. I've done the see the local stuff vacations, make day trips in the past and I feel like I'm trying too hard to have fun. It doesn't feel special because we could do all this stuff on a weekend anyway. That being said, I may end up doing mini vacations of a couple days here and there to cope with affordability regardless. I'd welcome some ideas that are a little different though. Will check on your discussion in a day or too and see what everyone has come up with. [whittby]

maybe that sound a little bit funniest "vacation at home" but more cheapess than we going to vacation into other place. we have a habits.vacation must be leave. many thing we can do if not.we can clean a house,a little bit renovation. gardening and get a sport like athletic, play volley ball, basket ball...u can open the internet for comment at MYLOT. See, we can do without leaving from our house. [hadi81]
