This will probably be more geared for the "over 50" mylotters, but I hope that everybody joins in!
When I was in "high echelon" management, I was required to dress the part and although I was not comfortable, I had about 5 or 5 custom made suite and matching Louis Vuitton attaché cases to match each suit! I was Mr. GQ!
Now that I am retired and don't have to put up without bosses and impressing people, my attire is 100% cut off pants or cargo shorts, wild t-shirts (ok, not that wild) and flip flops.
The only time I wear long pants and a shirt with sleeve is when I am at a Buddhist temple or Immigration.
I have to laugh at myself because not that many years ago I was a fashion hog and now I wear what I want...and in here in Thailand nobody cares!
What are you wearing now? Are you comfortable or hate dressing?

responses and comments:
Hi Rich, have a nice day! Like you while I was in unifirm, there were so many dresses! Now what I am wearing, just a dhoti-if you know what it is! It is so warm, I am not even wearing a shirt! ha ha ha Keep smiling!happy [loku18]
Definitely! And when you are in Thailand, relax! happy [richnai]
Hi Richnai I wore a suit (female of course) for work because it commanded respect where I needed it, I didn't compromise on trousers though. Now retired I have a scruffy teeshirt and shorts (my cats hate me - they hate bare legs so no knee available.) [3honor]
Hi 3honor! Yes...T-shirts for me! When I opened my first business and was hiring salespeople one of the last questions I asked if I was interested in them, was, Can you buy some Levis if I hire you? LOL I got so many happy faces and employees! [richnai]
I'm not yet "over 50" can I answer? [meluan]
ok, i lied.. they're corporate enemies evilgrindevil [mario_stevens]
Hi Richnay.! What is MR GQ ( the term I never hear before). I think in work we can not chose what we want to wear, we have to wear although its not our personality. I personally love casual clothes pair of comfort jeans plus t-shirt or polo shirt but most women really like to feel beautiful so if go to party I will use a gown. [nangisha]
Oh I see its magazine name. Learn a new thing every day in Mylot wub. thanks [nangisha]
hi rich..how's your leg? hope it's getting better happy i know what you mean when you said you were Mr.GQ..i'm going through that phase myself right now! having to dress up everyday to put on a fake smile for the people that i really don't like to see...and i can't even avoid them, because their my clients! hahaha... being on myLot feels like i'm training for retirement.. i don't have to worry much about my behaviour (as long as it's within the parameters of the T&Cs, i'm assuming anything goeshappy). i don' need to worry about what i'm wearing, if i'm wearing anything, or bother to preen myself continuously. but of course when my partner gives me her 'hunney, please try and look nice for me' look, it's an immediate transformation back to Mr.GQ.. hehe..i'd do anything for my fiancée. and i'm so fortunate that she puts up with my BS at home lol [mario_stevens]
i've got a collared shirt with no sleeves.. would that be 'smart casual' ? lol [mario_stevens]
i work in a small office where we are not required to dress up a lot (no suits, etc) but we need to look professional. to that end i do dress the part but fridays are jeans day at work which is good. [cher913]
Thanks cher! That almost makes friday part of the week-end! Do you or anybody know why we are supposed to dress up for work? With the exception of little old ladies and little men, (I knowing I am going to get bashed by that) does anyone even care? [richnai]
I have had jobs that I had to dress up for and hated it, I feel so much more comfortable in a pair of jeans and a tank top/t-shirt, I now own my own business and that's what I wear each day, some days with tennis shoes or a pair of boots, and in the summertime with sandals, must be very careful when I wear sandals though at work it can be very dangerous.shocked Glad your enjoying comfortable clothing! Happy Mylotting!!! [beaniefanatic13]
I own an automotive repair shop. So wearing sandals or flip flops can be very dangerous, with slipping, dropping something on my foot or just tripping over a cord. [beaniefanatic13]
my late hubby was 64yrs when he passed away. he was the telecomunications manager for U-Haul international. most days he had to wear dress slacks and long sleeved dress shirt at work. He was the best dressed man I ever knew. had 16 dress shirts, and matched slacks for each. 7 pairs of jeans for weekends, always wore t-shirts. cant remember how many of those. carried a hankercheif always first man id ever met like that other then my dad. he had any number of casual short sleeves to wear also.he had about 5 suits also i believe. the only time ive ever wanted to dress up was when we would go to Las Vegas. other then that, since my normal job was caregiver, id just wear clean presentable casual clothes. now that im retired. i just lounge around in pjs or comfort casual clotheshappy [bunnybon7]
thanks for best response [bunnybon7]
It's my day off today so I'm just in short sleeves and a track suit bottom. That's how I would be all day every day if I could but I'm not retired yet. Guess that's one of things that I can look forward to in retirement too! For work I dress 'smart' casual. We don't have a uniform and as I am the only female I can wear whatever as long as it is 'smart'. I wear mostly blak and white with some fake pearls or a scarf knotted. That seems to look 'just right'. [mysdianait]
happy Thanks! It is funny when I try to envision my friends and others here on mylots! I had you down for 100% Armani Collezioni! I love pearls! [richnai]
hi oh yes I am in ca and in the USA of course.we are really laid back here as a rule anyway. I am most comfortable in a demim skirt, blue of course, and a loose t shirt in my favorite shade of lilac. Gone are the days when I had to dress up to go to work at the library so am retired and comfortable and still look okay to go someplace if I need to. Thailand huh , are you as laid back as we are here in Ca? I have never been to Thailand but it was one of the countries I would love to visit ad I the money to travel. I am long retired and living in a retirement center. [Hatley]
Hi Hatley, I lived for years in the Los Angeles area and Thailand is about the same in Bangkok or other large cities, but in the boonies it is strictly what ever you want. I could go out today wearing a white dress shirt with a bow-tie and cut off jeans with wingtip shoes and would not even be noticed (I'd personally have a heart attack). It is very casual here. Like I mentioned, you only must look nice while going to a temple or at immigration or other official places. happy [richnai]
Hi richnai, Right it's Sunday afternoon and I am in my PJ and robe and oh ya I can not forget my pink Bonnie's slippers. I am very comfortable. happy I had to uniform when I worked at the nursing home and I am so delighted that I don't have to wear them any longer. However, I surly do miss work there. Take care snow [snowqueen200802]
bake macaroni and sausage sounds good! Are you cooking? happy Tand I thought that I was going to get the award from you. see how you arehappy Take care my friend and I do enjoy chatting with you.niceday Snow [snowqueen200802]
I love being comfortable. I have to wear a uniform everyday to work so when I am not there..I am all about comfort. When I go out..I do like looking nice but I also want to be comfortable. Today I wore a pair of fleece skorts and a tee shirt with flip flops. It was hot here today..lol. [JenInTN]
Woohoo! I like the way you think! [JenInTN]
Hi richnai, I hate dressing up as well. I'm jus fortunate that in my current job, we only dress up when we audience with prominent people but on normal days, we are free to dress what we want as long as it's presentable and we look at bit respectable. I sometimes turn down invitations where I needed to really look glamorous because I am such a slack when it comes to fashion and most of the time I only ended up looking like a woman on postpartum!silly [Theresaaiza]
Oh, yeah, synonymous to "terrible"!lollol [Theresaaiza]
Interesting. :) Honestly - it is true! We should be wearing comfortable clothing. Others are not at all important. I am comfortable in what I wear. I am normally in salwar kameezes. :) I avoid chunnis as it can get really hot out here. The same reason I avoid jeans. :) All my friends and neighbors wear flowery nighties most of the day. I am not comfortable in them. This is because salwar kameezes allow me to be a bit careless in the way I sit and walk without looking you know... :) I know it is not traditional, who cares. :) I have been like this for last so many years......:) Fashion, oh! yes. If I choose to spend, I would be the most fashionable person. I once wore a saree worth 200 INR with accessories worth another 200 to a wedding. None of my relatives wore anything less than 10000 INR there. :) That was about 10 years ago. :) And everybody was giving me those envious looks. :) Eventually, somebody asked me where I bought that saree. I told her. And the next thing I found them all wearing similar ones!!!! LOL. Of course, I donated the saree to my maid. Cant look like a factory product! :) [vandana7]
try again...beautiful [richnai]
Hi Richnai, Are you aiming that "over 50" comment at us knowing that we came from the 60's and 70's when we really didn't care what people thought...we dressed for comfort?? Did then and still do dress for comfort. It's not that I don't care how I look because I very much do....I just don't go broke buying into the whole fashion and name brand stuff that some people get into. I did once a while back ump up my fashion when I worked in an office and my boss offered me a huge raise if I looked more business-like. At first I refused and then thought, "Why Not?" Right now I'm wearing black spandex and a t-shirt. Normally I wear jeans and a sweatshirt or t-shirt. [sid556]
lolyep. I remember my mom trying to get me to wear the wranglers or Lee jeans which were cheaper. She swore they were the same. No they weren't. It had to be the Levi's. [sid556]
Yes, for years I would have to be working in suites and ties around my neck. I was a therapist and it was considered the norm to see clients dressed well. These days though, I notice many therapists in and out of hospitals, and even dentist wearing casual clothing. When I was working with clients though, I would have felt uncomfortable to be wearing casual clothing. So I was comfortably uncomfortable, if you know what I mean. lol Now that I have retired from seeing clients and work only on the Internet I can wear my jeans and T-shirts and I feel most comfortable. happy_Derek [derek_a]
Thanks derek for responding! I know exactly what you mean! It seems like a lot of people in the medical profession are more comfortable in "scrubs" and casual attire today. And if I ever need one, while I won't chose his clothing for approval, I'd rather see someone who looks comfortable. [richnai]
5 matching suits with matching LV cases, huh? one for each day of the week, i presume? lol but what can you do, you have to dress the part. it's expected of executives. admit it, if it wasn't for that, you wouldn't be retiring in comfort, right? and you chose the right place, you can wear the same thing every day! i do miss dressing up. i was a secretary so i went through that blazer, makeup, pantyhose thing. lol then i moved to companies where i'm just one in production so it became casual. when i would attempt the simplest smart casual, they'd think i'm jobhunting! now i work at home so it's house clothes all day every day. lol but i still want to work in an airconditioned office again. [binggaling]
happy yes, plaid...that is funny! All the rules shot to heck! w00t [richnai]
Hiya rich, I at this moment ab wearing a Bathrobe and a pair of Bedroom shoes.lol. Once I get my PC stuff done for the day I will get a bath and most likely wear a pair of shorts and a tee-shirt. Yesterday I wore a dress. It all depends on what my day is going to be like but normally I'm all about comfort. I never have been a clothes horse but I do like to keep 5 or 6 "Dress Up " outfits for church, dinner with family or whatever. I have found though that even as a woman , a pair of jeans, and a decent blouse looks good in most cases as long as you top it with a nice Jacket. You sound appropriately dressed too me for your lifestyle. Have fun ! moonbutters [moonbutters1]
rofl @ semi formal. That's me on a Tanning Day. Execpt I wear my birthday suit, so the only thing I need is a cold drink a a big towel and some lotion. Oh , and my shades. Ya' gotta wear shades..cool Have fun ! moonbutters [moonbutters1]
Jeans, a knit top, sneakers and a sweat jacket... And this is my work attire. lol [dawnald]
cheering dawnald's employercheering Need I say more! w00t [richnai]
