Smoking In A Non-smoking Hotel Room

As a smoker, if you were not able to get a smoking room, and had to stay in a non smoking room, would you smoke in the room? After all, you paid the same fee as everyone else, so why wouldn't you smoke? What do you non smokers think about this? Would you see any harm in their taking a smoke in a non smoking room?

I have smoked for over 16 years more than 30 cigarettes a day... I smoked anywhere also where forbidden was. In June I have stopped (I hope forever)... then I understand who doesn't withstand and it goes against the rules... but it would be better to also respect who doesn't smoke and the places where permitted is not... some a long time ago I would have smoked the same... I am a new man now! [ross74]
Thanks for the comment, ross and congratulations on your accomplishment! [Transdisc]

The problem with smoking is that it is the passive smokers that suffer along with the smoker. There is freedombut when freedom affects the health of others then it is not considered freedom. If someone wants to smoke themselves to death that is their perogative but it's no one else's problem, But when it'sother people'shealth involved then it is every one elses problem. Sorry i hate smoking so you may thinki am abit biased lol. [yanjiaren]
Thanks for the response, yanjiaren. [Transdisc]

of course you shouldn't. it's a non smoking room. when I've ended up only being able to get a smoking room in a hotel it smells bad. yes, it's all been cleaned between customers, but the smell gets into everything. so if a customer after you wants a non smoking room it's not fair that they have to put up with the smell. [Galena]
Thanks, Galena. Yes, you can smell when a smoked in room, even when it's been cleaned. [Transdisc]

I don't smoke, so naturally I wouldn't. I have gone into a non smoking room, however, and found an ashtray, full, and butts on the floor and an odor in the room. I was pretty angry to say the least. I got a new room. I paid for something and got a lie...simple as that. [buldwgz]
I can't believe that you actually found a non smoking room in such a deplorable condition! For shame! I don't blame you for being upset. [Transdisc]

I am also a smoker and I agree with you for I too smoke in non smoking rooms and will continue to do so, I don't see any harm in it, it is just like resturants same eating area one table smoking one non, this makes no sense to me...I think they have taken this smoking and second hand smoke way to the wrong level...back in the day my grandparents and parents smoked and never did we ever hear anything of second hand smoke cause problems nor has anything been proved to this fact it is all speculation just as cancer and alot of other diseases, all they are doing is guessing and we pay the consequences, I am sorry it just ticks me off..I do alot of research on second hand smoke and they have not proofed that it causes any harm...people just need a way to target certain individuals cause the real problems can't be pinpointed... [mnflower]
Ah, finally someone with a differing opinion responds to my discussion. It seems to me that several of my smoking friends hold this same opinion, mnflower. I imagine you do get quite frustrated and may feel somewhat "attacked" for simply wanting or needing to smoke, and not being able to smoke where you want. Just a point of clarification -- you say that you agree with me about this issue. I did not state what I think about this, I just wondered how smokers viewed it. I do not even smoke. Thanks for responding. [Transdisc]

Smoke Io. Smoking does not want to say maleducaziono, where one cannot, I do not smoke, if I can I go out, in the hotel, I have never had proclemi. I have problems on the plane, but I have got used, and resist by now. [miryam]
Thanks, miryam. It sounds like you're making a valiant effort to respect others. I imagine it can be tough, sometimes, especially on an airplane. [Transdisc]

Well I'd first see if I could go to another hotel. If though I had no choice but to use a non-smoking room then no I wouldn't smoke in there. They have the right to have smoking and non-smoking rooms. That is their choice and if I'm going to use the establishment then I have to honor their rules. Now I will state that if they didn't bother to tell me till after I paid for the room then I'd cause a scene on it but otherwise no I wouldn't care. I'd just smoke outside. [emeraldisle]
That certainly sounds reasonable enough, emeraldisle. I've been with friends who will check in to a room knowing that it's a non smoking room and lighting up anyway, reasoning, "Hey, I paid the same as everyone else, and I'm going to smoke." It's nice to see someone who recognizes the intricacies of integrity, even when it's an inconvenience (which it usually is.) [Transdisc]

Transdisc, I've been a smoker since I was 13 and I'm now almost 37. The older I've gotten, the less I smoke. There have been times in my life where I've stayed at a hotel and there were no smoking rooms available. I've never smoked in a non-smoking room. Why? Because I think it is rude. You are surrounded by nonsmokers in their rooms and I'm sure they would be able to smell the smoke. Also - not sure how sensitive smoke detectors are in the non-smoking rooms, so I wouldn't want to take the chance of them going off. The only time I would smoke while having to occupy a non-smoking room is if there is a balcony/patio in which I could step outside the room to smoke. Never in the room. GaCathyMac [GACathyMac]
I meant, "that makes good sense." I don't know where my head is today! [Transdisc]

I have never found this problem. Although I do ask for a smoking room. If they dont have one fine Ill look somewhere else to stay the night. [drillerswife]
Simple enough!! Thanks for the comment! [Transdisc]

I think the main problem is that smoke stains things and does tend to seep into carpets etc. I suppose that smoking the odd time in a non-smoking room won't matter, but I still wouldn't do it. [emisle]
Good point, emisle. Still, I wonder if it would matter it the person who followed the smoker was allergic to smoke, etc.? Thanks for the comment. [Transdisc]

I am a smoker and i have never ever smoked in a non smoking room. I have alot of non smoking freinds who say how they hate the smell of a stale smokey room. Its unfair to taint that room because you smoke. I've sometimes been tempted to hang out the window and smoke but in the end i just go down to the lobby our outside for a quick one. Saves money on ciggerettes too :) Once i didnt smoke for 14 hours because i was in a non smoking room and being lazy and then when i gave in to one and go outside, i got really dizy and went shakey and hot ^_^ my fella refused to let my hang over the toilet, picked me up carried me to the bed and told me to lie down and took off my extra clothes, and i soon felt better, i am now more caucious about not smoking for a long time, but i still wont smoke in a hotel room jsut because i dont want to go outside. [chloe9013]
So good to see you, chloe. What an interesting tale. I can't imagine getting sick like that from not smoking. It just never occurred to me that one could feel so bad when NOT smoking. LOL. I applaud your efforts to "obey the rules" for the sake of others. But please, take care of yourself. Thanks so much for your comments. [Transdisc]

Yes,I am a bad lion and I do this all the time,I dont care about anything the rules say,I even take a can of that stuff that eliminates the pungent fumes from the atmosphere. [jimbo45]
Why am I not surprised? [Transdisc]

Never touched them. Those who break the rules, aren't polite or thoughtful as people who can't be around smoke have to sit in a room while someone else is being selfish. No offence to anyone but nobody second hand smoke and a hotel, club, whatever is entitled to say no to this. =) I wouldn't see the problem of going outside or somewhere it would effect people or break rules. (this just my honest opinion) ~Joey P.s It's very annoying if you don't smoke and then someone comes along and does it right next door to a big sign saying. "no smoking allowed".. luckily here it's an offence to do it =) Kudos! [joey_matthews]
Not meaning to pry, but do you include alcohol in this drug list? Just tell me to bug off if I've gone to far. That's fine. [Transdisc]

We went to a motel in Branson Missouri and we asked for a smoking room because my stepdaughter and her friend smokes and they said their rooms was both smoking and non they also said all that they had to do was get a ashtray but me I don't smoke but I am around people all the time that does smoke and you can tell when they have been in the room. [kylanie]
Yes, it is usually obvious to me when a smoker has been in a hotel room, kylanie. Thanks for sharing. :) [Transdisc]

I'm used to smoke, even occasionally. I just usually go outside and smoke there just because I hate the smell of a smoked in room. I went to DC last year and one of the few times I ever read that sign at the back of the door, I learned that if you smoked in a non-smoking room, then they are going to charge you for expenses incurred getting that smell off the room. And I'm sure it can be really expensive. [uiwwitch]
There's nothing quite like the aroma of a smoked-in room, is there, uiwwitch? Very distinctive smell. Thanks for sharing. :) [Transdisc]

If they didn't have my credit card I would smoke in the room. =x I worked for Homewood Suites and they would charge your card to clean the room.Hey! I have Deloreans for Sale Some non smokers complained while i was working that the room smelled like smoke. I didn't smell anything but I know there were a bunch of professional softball guys staying in there for 2 weeks and they were always drunk and noisy. So I don't doubt it. [coolseeds]
It seems like the normal way of things, coolseeds. I have friends who smoke and they don't hesitate to light up in a non smoking room. Thanks for your input on this. [Transdisc]

I am a nonsmoker, but I think most smokers might well risk it. I know people rent houses and apartments all the time and aren't supposed to smoke or have pets or other things they agree to in the contract but they do it anyway. Can you believe those rare Victorian rings!? As a non-smoker, I always find the rooms smell a little funky anyway. Someone having smoked in it is probably the least of my worries. [Woodpigeon]
That's what I'm talking about! [Woodpigeon]

This is tough question to answer especially considering the ethics topic that I started. We always wear Bicycle HelmetsAs as smoker I'm often ticked off in general at how we are treated by the public at large and businesses. On the one hand it would be wrong to smoke in a non-smoking room just on principle, however I highly doubt that I would want to trot outside for a smoke each time I wanted one, considering how much I spent on the room. I've never been in this situation, as I've always chosen to stay in a smoking room and made sure that I would get one well in advance of any travels. If I were in the situation I have to admit that I probably would smoke in the room, but open a window and stand by it or do it on the balconey out of respect. Well now I just feel like a hypocrit. [filmbuff]
Thanks for a response with a hint of struggle attached, filmbuff. D@mn your ethic discussion! I imagine that it would get terribly old to have to head outside each time a smoke craving hit. Principles are a major pain in the butt. I lost my whole career over them. Surely smoking in a non-smoking room is not so bad, is it? Or paying for a movie once, and going to several movies? (hehe) [Transdisc]

I would but I would smoke out of the Window as we all know Smoke lingers and it is not fair on the Non Smoker having to put up with that So I would hang out the Window smoking lol. Maybe I'd get some St. Dupont Pens. [gabs8513]
Hehehehe never thought of that with my History lol [gabs8513]
