I just went to Moon Stone Beach in Cambria, California with my mom to celebrate my birthday. We have made this an annual event. We love the coast and it is so beautiful there. There are two small villages full of all kinds of different shops and restaurants. Cambria offers the best of everything, the beach, shopping and eating. They have a fabulous candy store and we have a lot of favorite shops and restaurants we always go to. It is only about 3 hours away from Fresno, so it's not a long trip. We love it and plan to go again next year. I took my friend this year as well and he loved it too.

I would count that as a vacation, and it just so happens I am from Illinois too! I was born in the small town of Monmouth, Illinois, close to Galesburg. I have gone back to visit my relatives lots of times. What town or city are you from? I love your icon! [lalav1]

My last vacation was up in Seattle, Washington. I wanna move there! --- --- --- "I certainly think Britney Spears is the devil. The way she projects herself and the fact that she is so obviously vacuous. I think it's such a shame that she became so influential to very small children." -- MORRISSEY [Poison_Girl]
I'm glad you enjoyed your vacation in Seattle. [lalav1]
My last vacation was a 7 day cruise to alaska :) One of the best experiences of my life, I met a whole bunch of amazing people there, I still keep in touch with some of them, even though I miss meeting them face to face :( [xxnitemareangel]

I bet it was fun! I have been to Disney Land here in California, but it's been a long time ago. [lalav1]
It sounds like a lovely place and your picture is great. For my last vacation, my husband and I went to the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, VA (in the mountains). It was great because the autumn leaves were very colorful and the scenery was gorgeous. The resort has everything and we were so spoiled by the end of the vacation. We were celebrating our first anniversary. [ChewySpree]
Thanks for the compliment. Your vacation sounds nice. I am originally from Illinois and I miss the autumn colors. Congrats on your first anniversary! [lalav1]
I don't think I've ever taken an actual vacation before. My wife and I did go up north a bit last spring to celebrate our third wedding anniversary. But that was just over night. [srhelmer]
I think that still counts as a vacation. [lalav1]
Newport, Rhode Island. Really pretty! [Gloree]
We recently went to Niagara Falls with friends of ours who are from the Netherlands. This was our second visit to Niagara. What a beautiful place. I loved the Maid of the Mist. It brings you up close to the falls and you can feel the power of the water. We visited many of the attractions, which I felt were overpriced. Definately a tourist nightmare. The one attraction that we enjoyed was the Butterfly Conservatory. So beautiful. I could have stayed there for hours. [ElusiveButterfly]
Our last vacation was down to the South - Lousiana and Texas for my best friends wedding in Baton Rouge. We spent a bit over a week in Baton Rouge, Dallas, & San Antonio. We flew in to San Antonio from Portland. Drove to Baton Rouge from San Antonio, then drove to Dallas from Baton Rouge after the wedding (visited my best friend and his wife), and then drove from Dallas to San Antonio (we stayed in San Antoino two nights). We flew out of San Antonio again to Portland. It was an enjoyable trip and a memorable one, I just we would have had a little bit more time or it had been a different time of year so I could have gone to Sea World. [Penguinsangel]
Sounds like you had a nice time. I like Sea World. [lalav1]
CHINA SHANGHAI IS MY LAST VACATION [ishqvishq]

the coast of Maine, between Portland and Bar Harbor. Lots of small islands, lobster boats, pretty much undeveloped. Fun for kayaking, and great fresh seafood to eat everyday. Moon Stone Beach is a great name, nice picture too. [Idlewild]
Thanks for the compliment on my picture. I'm not a sea food lover myself, but kayaking sounds like fun! [lalav1]
In mai this year I went for a holiday to Marokko, Agadir [costello]
I have never heard of this place and I have no idea where it is, but I hope you enjoyed yourself. [lalav1]
Me and my husband flew from Chicago to Manchester, New Hampshire, in July 2004 just for the heck of it. I planned the trip in about 3 days. Luckily he works fort he airlines so we flew free. Then we rented a car and drove to Portland, Maine, and had a lot of fun there. Then after 2 days in Portland we drove south to Massachusetts, went through Salem, stopped at some beach and almost drowned (not kidding), then drove back to Manchester only to realize that there was a NASCAR race that weekend and the price of hotels tripled (we should have known that since we are big NASCAR fans) so we had to drive back to Mass. to find a hotel for the night before we flew home the day before the big race. Oh well. It was fun. Last real vacation I took before that was my honeymoon to Disney World in January 2000. Other then those we have driven to see family at various times during the year but it isn't very relaxing for me so not much of a vacation. I did spend 8 weeks in Chicago with my dad this summer helping him after surgery. [4monsters4me]
That's nice that you can fly for free. You sound like you had a good time, except for the almost drowning incident. I've been to Disney Land here in California a few times and that's always fun. Thanks for your response. [lalav1]
I went to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic in April and stayed at Club Med for a week. I had a great time. it was just me. All food, drinks, and activities were included. I had a blast. [Cortney]

Kashmir (Kashmiri: ?????? ?????, Hindi: ??????, Urdu: ?????), also known as Cashmere, is the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent. Historically the term Kashmir was used to refer to the valley lying between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal range. Today Kashmir refers to a much larger area that includes the regions of Kashmir valley, Jammu and Ladakh. The main "Valley of Kashmir" is a low-lying fertile region surrounded by magnificent mountains and fed by many rivers. It is renowned for its natural beauty and quaint lifestyle. Contents [hide] 1 Description 2 Political divisions 3 History 3.1 Modern history 4 Current status 5 Area and Subdivisions 5.1 Indian-administered Kashmir 5.2 Pakistan-administered Kashmir 5.3 Chinese-controlled Kashmir 6 Demographics 7 Culture & Cuisine 8 Economy 9 Tourism 10 References 11 Further reading 12 See also 13 External links [edit] Description Because of its rugged mountainous terrain, Kashmir has a poor transportation system, making vast regions of Kashmir completely inaccessible by vehicle. Shown here is the Kargil-Leh highway, one of the two highways connecting Ladakh with Jammu and the Kashmir valley.Kashmir was originally the most important centres of Hinduism and later also became an important centre of Buddhism. Kashmir retained a strong influence of Buddhism despite the influence of Kashmir Saivism and the various Sufi Orders of Islam. The Rishi Order emerged as the most dominant Sufi Order in Kashmir because of its assimilation of Buddhist practices. The founder of the Order, Nund Rishi or Sheikh Nooruddin Wali, is the patron saint of Kashmir. Nund Rishi wrote a poem in the praise of the Buddha and was considered to be the spiritual heir of Lal Ded, the Kashmiri Saivite saint. He also had differences with the Kubrawiyya Sufi Order which was brought to Kashmir by Syed Ali Hamdani in the fourteenth century. Kashmir is derived from the Sanskrit "Kashyapa" + "Mira", which means the mountain range of sage Kashyapa[1]. Srinagar, the ancient capital, lies alongside Dal Lake and is famous for its canals and houseboats. Srinagar (alt. 1,600 m. or 5,200 ft.) served as a favoured summer capital for many foreign conquerors who found the heat of the Northern Indian plains in the summer season to be oppressive. Just outside the city are the beautiful Shalimar, Nishat and Chashmashahi gardens created by Mughal emperors. Today Mainland Kashmir is 99% Muslim although there is a significant Hindu minority in some regions of Jammu (Jammu is part of modern day political Kashmir) [edit] Political divisions The region is divided among three countries in a bitter territorial dispute: Pakistan controls the northwest portion (Northern Areas and Pakistan Administered Kashmir), India controls the central and southern portion (Jammu and Kashmir) and Ladakh, and the People's Republic of China controls the northeastern portion (Aksai Chin and the Trans-Karakoram Tract). India controls the majority of the Siachen Glacier (higher peaks), whereas Pakistan controls the lower peaks. Though these regions are in practice administered by their respective claimants, India has never formally recognised the accession of the areas claimed by Pakistan and China. India claims those areas, including the area "ceded" to China by Pakistan in the Trans-Karakoram Tract in 1963, are a part of its territory, while Pakistan claims the region, excluding Aksai Chin and Trans-Karakoram Tract. Pakistan views the entire Kashmir region as a disputed territory while India refuses to accept Kashmir as a disputed territory and claims Kashmir is an integral part of India according to the Indian constitution, since at the time of India's division Kashmir was given to India based upon the King's will. Kashmir is considered one of the world's most dangerous territorial disputes due to the nuclear capabilities of India and Pakistan. The two countries have fought three wars over the territory: the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 and the third Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 (reference List of wars). More recently, in 1999, there was a limited border conflict (also referred to by some as the fourth Kashmir war) in the Kargil area of India-controlled Kashmir. The rest of this article will, for the sake of clarity, refer to the parts of Kashmir administered by India, Pakistan and China as "Indian Kashmir", "Pakistani Kashmir", and "Chinese Kashmir" respectively. By this nomenclature, the word "Kashmir" in "Indian Kashmir" is used in a general sense to refer to what India calls "Jammu and Kashmir". [edit] History Further information: History of the Kashmir conflict For history of Kashmir prior to the 19th century, see History of Kashmir. [edit] Modern history By the mid-19th century Kashmir had passed from the control of the Durrani Empire (see Ahmad Shah Durrani) of Afghanistan, and four centuries of Muslim rule under the Mughals of Delhi and the Afghans, to the conquering Sikh armies. This process began in 1819, when 30,000 soldiers of Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Lahore attacked and annexed Kashmir as a part of Ranjit Singh's empire. Then, in 1846, the British rulers sold Kashmir to Maharaja Gulab Singh as part of the Treaty of Amritsar. Finally, during the latter part of the 19th century, Kashmir came to be ruled by the Dogras, a predominantly Hindu people in the area around Jammu, who were installed as rulers by the Sikhs. The Treaty of Accession which shows Hari Singh's accession of the state of Jammu and Kashmir to IndiaFollowing the independence from British rule in 1947 and the partition of India and Pakistan, individual princely states in the subcontinent were given the choice of joining either of the two countries. The strategic value of Kashmir meant it was important for both countries to have it join their side. Pathan tribals covertly supported by the Pakistani army invaded Kashmir and overran the Kashmiri army. The Maharaja appealed to India for help, and India refused to send its army as long as Kashmir was not a part of the Indian Union. The Maharaja then signed the Instrument of accession to the Indian Union. Regular Indian forces then entered Kashmir and pushed back the invading forces. Prime Minister Nehru (himself of Kashmiri lineage) of India then took the situation to the United Nations Security Council and a ceasefire was implemented. The ceasefire line gave Pakistan control of about one-third of Kashmir and India the remaining. The situation considered by the UN Security Council, which established a special commission was described in UNSC Resolution 39, passed on 20 January 1948. Subsequent to the recommendation of the commission, the Security Council ordered in its resolution #47, passed on 21 April 1948, that the accession of Kashmir to either India or Pakistan be determined in accordance with an internationally supervised plebiscite. In a string of subsequent resolutions, the Security Council noted that the UN supervised plebiscite required by resolution #47 had not been held. Notable resolutions reaffirming the requirement for the UN supervised plebiscite include UNSC resolution #80 of 14 March 1950, which established a ceasefire line after war between India and Pakistan, and UNSC resolution #122 of 24 January 1957, which condemned the establishment of a replacement legislative assembly in Kashmir. The Government of India holds that the Maharaja signed a document of accession to India in 1948. Pakistan has disputed whether the Maharaja actually signed the accession treaty before Indian troops entered Kashmir. Furthermore, Pakistan claims the Indian government has never produced an original copy of this accession treaty and thus its validity and legality is disputed. However, India has produced the instrument of accession with an original copy image on its website. Alan Campbell-Johnson, the press attache to the Viceroy of India states that "The legality of the accession is beyond doubt." [edit] Current status Both Pakistan and India claim the entire Kashmir region to be their integral part based on geographic and political background. This issue has remained a point of contention between the two countries ever since independence from British rule in 1947. Both countries have fought three wars over the Kashmir issue apart from other localised fighting. Kashmir contains a valley whose beauty has been acclaimed by many and stretches out to about 7,200 square kilometres (2,800 square miles) at an elevation of 1,675 metres (5,500 feet). A Mughal ruler, Jehangir, who built the famed Shalimar Gardens in Kashmir, made the statement, "If heaven be on this earth, it must be here." It has a very ancient history, and it was for a long time one of the centres of Hindu philosophical, literary and religious culture, a tradition still maintained by the depleted native Hindu population. Kashmir once was called the Switzerland of the east. Kashmiri literature, sculpture, music, dance, painting and architecture have had a profound influence in Asia. On October 8, 2005, Kashmir was struck by an earthquake with a magnitude between 7.6 and 7.8. The First Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, was of Kashmiri lineage. Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif is of Kashmiri lineage as was Allama Iqbal, the famed Urdu poet. [edit] Area and Subdivisions Political division of Kashmir [edit] Indian-administered Kashmir India controls approximately 45.5% (101,387 km²) of the disputed territory. Indian-administered Kashmir, also known as the state of Jammu and Kashmir, includes three main regions: Kashmir Valley Jammu Ladakh Siachen Glacier [edit] Pakistan-administered Kashmir The Pakistan-controlled portion of Kashmir is divided up into two main regions: Pakistan Administered Kashmir - 250 miles long with width varying from 10 to 40 miles, 13,350 km² (5134 mile [koustav_sarkar]
